These photos were taken at the base outside of Danang, S.Viet-Nam during the first half of 1963. I had been a member of H&MS-16 located at MCAS Futenma, Okinawa when I was tansferred to HMM-162 to work the UHF bench. We lived in the old French barracks and operated out of the hangar across the airfield, next to the commercial airport. That was convenient for us to sneak away and get some bam-ni-ba (or however you spell it!) I was with 162 until HMM-261 replaced them, and I remained with 261 for a short period of time, until I rotated back to "The World." While in Danang, I was promoted from Cpl. to Sgt. That was great because we had a Sgt's barracks. We also had a club with a fridge. Luxury of luxuries, if you know what i mean. :-)). Forgive me for not remembering names from 30 - 35 years ago. If you recognize someone in these photos, E-mail me and I will enter their names into the captions.
When you get to the color transparencies, please don't think the Vietnamese sky is red, orange or purple. It's just the result of 35 years of aging on the slides. Actually, they aged more gracefully then I have. Also, if you are looking for action photographs...go to see "Saving Private Ryan." That's not meant to be flippant, it's just a fact, that if you were in a soup sandwich, you didn't have time to take pictures. That was the job of combat photographers.
Enjoy...GunnyG
